Claudia
started Cera-Mix Studios in 1981 and has been running
it (or
it has been running her)
ever since. Dedicated to the idea of bringing contemporary
art into the home and the public environment, Claudia produces
dinnerware, platters, tiles, architectural items, public
art and sculpture. Her functional work is about pattern
and color on strong “carrier” forms. The dinnerware
and tile the colors and patterns can be mixed matched or
used solo. (Hence the name Cera-Mix). Her dinnerware graces
tables nationally and internationally. It has been featured
in many magazines, books, and recently a movie (yet untitled
Mike Judge film). Her tile can be seen in homes all over
the world. It is also installed at the Austin-Bergstrom
International Airport, the Southeast Community Library
in Austin, the Seay Building at the University of Texas,
Great Hills Baptist Church, St Francis Children’s
Hospital in Los Angeles, IBM’s main Austin campus,
the McCoy School of Business at Texas State University,
the Carver Museum in Austin and Westbank Library in Austin.
Claudia’s
sculpture can be placed either indoors or out. The pieces
range from full-scale
human figures
to a recent series of monkeys. (See Sculpture Gallery on
the Cera-Mix.com web site.) Each piece takes 2-6 months
to complete and is one-of-a-kind.
Artist Statement
About
her functional pottery, Claudia says: I love color and
pattern. By layering, building
color on color, pattern on pattern I like to feel I’m
creating a symphony of inter-related imagery. I delight
in mixing all the patterns, of setting a table with a
plethora of pattern, of making a platter and visually
reconciling the disparate elements into one unified vibrant
whole. The best of both worlds, my work is both highly
functional and visually stimulating.
